What is Taking In/Letting Out?
“Taking in” and “letting out” are sewing techniques used in garment alteration to adjust the size or fit of clothing:
Taking In: This alteration involves reducing the circumference or width of a garment. It’s usually done along the seams, where excess fabric is removed and the seam is re-stitched to make the garment smaller. Taking in can be done on various parts of the garment such as the sides, waist, sleeves, or shoulders, depending on where the fit needs adjustment.
Letting Out: Conversely, letting out involves increasing the size of a garment by adding extra fabric to the seams. This is typically done if the garment is too tight and needs more room. It requires having enough seam allowance to be able to extend the size, and it may involve re-cutting or using extra fabric if there isn’t enough seam allowance to let out.
Both of these alterations require skill and precision to maintain the overall look and integrity of the garment. They are commonly performed by tailors or individuals with sewing expertise to customize clothing to fit specific measurements or body changes.
